Kanye West "All of the lights (feat. Rihanna & Kid Cudi)"

Inutile fare presentazioni su Kanye West, quest'uomo viaggia alla velocità della luce e seguirlo per noi umani sarebbe troppo difficile. Io ogni volta rimango senza parole, sia quando si tratta di qualche canzone da lui prodotta e cantata sia quando si deve parlare dei suoi videoclip che sono tutt'uno con i brani.

Questo è uno di quei casi. Parlo di "All of the lights" (ascolta) ultimo singolo di Kanye West, datato 19 Febbraio 2011 (per quanto riguarda la premiere del video), estratto da "My beautiful twisted dark fantasy", ultimo album dell'artista meno commerciale dal solito in cui da spazio a sperimentazioni e osa sonorità sempre nuove.

Questo singolo lo vedete dal titolo vede la collaborazione di Rihanna (onnipresente ormai) e Kid Cudi. Ma soprattutto c'è una piccola cosa che non si nota dal video semi testuale ma che quando ci da dentro con le immagini sbalordisce e non solo per Rihanna.
Provate a dare un'occhiata ai crediti e poi ditemi se non notate qualcosa che sono Kanye West poteva permettersi:

Beh, non vi dirò altro, sono sicuro che starete fissando la lista con occhi sbarrati.

Parlando del video, bellissimo l'intro (che probabilmente verrà molto spesso tagliato, ma non per questo merita di passare inosservato. in bianco e nero, davvero ben fatto, degno di un piccolo cortometraggio.

Scommetto che avete notato anche voi il tatuaggio a forma di pistola di Rihanna...

Kris Menace feat. Emil "Walkin' on the moon". Non ci siamo.

Scendere nei facili paragoni è fin troppo facile, ma "Discopolis" è uno di quei dischi difficili da dimenticare e paragonarlo a qualcosa altro non è facile. Intanto perché rimane una hit dal sapore electro-house abbastanza raffinato da essere entrato anche in classifiche piuttosto commerciali e poi perché assieme a Kris Menace c'era comunque la mano di Lifelike.

Premesso questo aggiungo che (per quel che riguarda il mio modesto parere) lo sbarco nel mondo della musica commerciale di Kris Menace non è quello che sognavo. Intanto si va a campionare "Walkin' on the moon" di due come The Dream e Kanye West (che si presta ad uno dei rappeggi migliori che abbia mai sentito), per cui il lavoro deve necessariamente essere all'altezza.
Secondo, riesco a vedere poco lavoro oltre alla base elettronica (presa in prestito da "Lightning", e quella sì che rimane una canzone un po' alla Mylo, decisamente 80's), ma soprattutto il cantato non offre nulla più di quanto non facesse The Dream, per cui ci si trova di fronte ad un progetto che non mi convince sufficientemente per essere promosso nonostante una notevole influenza retrò, anni '80 per essere precisi, con qualche rivisitazione ma nulla di davvero intrigante.

Certo il mio giudizio non è ovviamente obiettivo, l'originale per me rimane una delle migliori canzoni hip hop di sempre, praticamente senza alcun difetto, senza alcun motivo che giustifichi il fatto di metterci le mani sopra, però anche cercando di essere il più distaccato, nel pezzo di Menace ed Emil non trovo quel groove che giustifichi anche un semplice "pollice su" come si usa nei social network.

Recensione | Duck Sauce "Barbra Streisand"

Sì, alla fine arrivo anche io, per ultimo ma comunque eccomi qui per parlare di questo disco. La scintilla che ha fatto scoccare questo articolo posso dire sia stato l'ultimo giorno dell'anno quando impegnato a mixare per amici, si avvicina alla consolle un amico chiedendomi senza tanti giri di parole: "Mi metti quella canzone che fa oooh-oooh-oooh-oh??".
Dopo essermi ripreso da questa faccia -_-'' mi è venuto in mente che il disco non poteva che essere "Barbra Streisand" (ascolta), ultimo lavoro del duo americano Duck Sauce, al secolo A-Track e Armand Van Helden.

Coretto insistente che si insinua facilmente nella mente di chiunque, arrangiamento house funky che obbliga a muovere ogni parte del corpo ma soprattutto obbliga chiunque entri in contatto con la melodia a fischiettarla, canticchiarla almeno una volta. L'impronta di Armand Van Helden già abituato a pezzi house di noto successo si nota parecchio in questa canzone e nella sua immediatezza e buona parte del suo successo nasce proprio da questo. E poi quel "barbrstreisà" che segna una piccola pausa prima che il disco inizi di nuovo a darci dentro, magnifico oserei dire.
Soprattutto perché nel panorama della musica house non sono rari pezzi che hanno fatto successo nonostante un testo molto poco impegnato (pensate alla "Around the world" dei Daft Punk), questo pezzo raggiunge un livello di minimalismo ancora più elevato visto che il nome e cognome della famosa cantante vengono giusto pronunciati con enfasi ma non cantati.
Anzi, chissà che magari un giorno proprio la famosa cantante non si cimenti con una versione cantata di questa traccia che possiamo definire semi-strumentale.

E poi c'è il video. Se nel precedente singolo "aNYway" si capiva già dal titolo che era un omaggio a New York, per questa canzone ci hanno pensato con il video a omaggiare la Grande Mela. Anzi, il video nella sua breve durata, giusto un paio di minuti e mezzo è un piccolo capolavoro, un randevouz di celebrità e personaggi che popolano ogni fotogramma e che rendono ancora più piacevole l'ascolto della canzone. Si parte dall'imitatrice di Barbra Streisand che si lascia andare ad un'esibizione sulle note della canzone, ad un appassionato fan che si cimenta pure lui nel cantare il famoso ritornello a gente come Pharrel Williams, Kanye West, Patrick Gemayel dei Chromeo (che canta pure lui con l'ausilio del talk box) e tantissimi altri che potete trovare su questa pagina.

"We are the world" per Haiti, 25 anni dopo. Povero Jackson...

Se c'è una canzone che ogni volta riesce a farmi mettere i brividi penso che "We are the world" sia una di quelle. Ho già parlato della versione originale e di quanto sia incredibile vedere tanti artisti famosi cantare assieme per una giusta causa.

25 anni dopo Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie e Wyclef Jean (nato ad Haiti) hanno ben pensato di rifare la canzone (che potete ascoltare qui) questa volta per aiutare il popolo di Haiti, dopo la tragedia del terremoto che ha distrutto tutto ciò che si poteva distruggere in un paese povero come questo.

Purtroppo e lo dico quasi con le lacrime agli occhi, musicalmente parlando il risultato è a di poco disastroso. Certo quando qualcosa è fatto a fin di bene si può accettare tutto però purtroppo ascoltando questa canzone mi pare evidente che si sia persa l'atmosfera dell'originale, quelle emozioni che fanno venire i brividi, che riescono a commuovere. Si riesce ad accettare la voce auto-tunizzata di Lil Wayne e T-Pain ma sinceramente l'inciso rap della fase finale mi ha fatto spegnere la canzone prima del dovuto con l'amaro in bocca.

Un peccato davvero perché era partita molto bene convincendomi quasi che molte volte si può rifare qualcosa senza strafare. Sono bastati un paio di minuti per farmi ricredere. Peccato anche per gli artisti che hanno partecipato nel coro ma non hanno cantato come Keri Hilson, Jordin Sparks o Robin Thicke, tre artisti che vederli solo nel coro mi sono sembrati troppo in secondo piano. Peccato anche per coloro che non hanno cantato, che purtroppo non erano presenti, gente come Beyoncé, Shakira, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, John Legend, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Timberlake, Leona Lewis, Rihanna di sicuro avrebbe fatto bene al disco, ma probabilmente avranno avuto altri impegni.

Insomma aspettavo con ansia questa canzone convinto che fosse difficile rovinare certe note, ma non sempre le cose vanno come si vorrebbe ma se non altro acquistando la canzone si fa comunque un'opera di bene.

Pianoforte mania, le proposte di YouTube/4

Ecco il quarto appuntamento che gli amanti delle canzoni al pianoforte non mancheranno di apprezzare. Come siete già stati abituati ecco qualche canzone pop/r'n'b che è stata sapientemente trasformata in una canzone suonata con questo strumento che rende davvero tutto diverso.

Recensione | Bob Sinclar feat. Steve Edwards "Peace song"

In realtà non so bene se digerire questo disco o meno. Nonostante il notevole successo riscosso negli ultimi anni lo sbarco nel mondo della musica commerciale non mi ha particolarmente colpito, se non fosse per la parentesi di "World, hold on".

Questa "Peace song" (ascolta) però in realtà introduce qualcosa di tendenzialmente nuovo che riesce a stimolare decisamente più che "Lala song", più che altro per un arrangiamento molto più curato, con alcuni elementi "nuovi" che non fanno di questo disco un follow up, un seguito di altre produzioni. Diciamo un parente di secondo grado, non di primo.
Si parte con il giro di basso, impetuoso, davvero notevole agli alti volumi, impossibile da non notare e si conclude con l'ormai classico auto tune, che tanto si sente negli ultimi tempi nel mondo hip hop, parlo del tipico effetto di voce alla Kanye West ("Love lockdown", "Heartless", per intenderci), metallico al punto giusto.

In realtà mi fermo qui perchè non c'è molto altro da aggiungere, se non il fatto che la parte rimanente del disco seppur senza il groove trascinante di "Lala song" riesce comunque a conquistare il pubblico più commerciale in cerca di un motivetto da fischiettare o da ballare in discoteca.

Su YouTube c'è un mondo di artisti ma anche semplicissimi talenti del piano forte che meritano di essere ascoltati. Kanye West "Paranoid" | Quando Rihanna fa l'attrice

Davvero molto interessante questo video che fa da colonna sonora a "Paranoid" (ascolta) uno degli ultimi singoli di Kanye West assieme a Mr Hudson.
Salta all'occhio prima di tutto il suo stile noir, che a me ricorda un po' Sin City, con quelle atmosfere cupe ma anche quelle scritte che potrebbero ricordare un fumetto, ma soprattutto il video colpisce per la presenza di Rihanna che permette al video di uscire dall'anonimato grazie alla presenza di una delle cantanti più in vista in questi ultimi anni.
Fa sorridere la macchinina che corre in mezzo alle montagne, un piccolo modellino che corre su una pista di quelle con cui si giocava da piccoli, un bell'effetto per un video che merita un'occhiata.
Merita un'ascoltata anche la canzone che in linea con quello già contenuto nell'album di Kanye "808s & Heartbrek" fa largo uso di auto tune per modificare il tono della voce rendendolo meno naturale.

The Dream + Kanye West "Walking on the moon"

Seguo sempre Kanye West e i progetti al quale prende parte, uno di questi mi ha particolarmente incuriosito, si tratta di "Walking on the moon" (ascolta) il cui autore The-Dream è probabilmente sconosciuto ai più ma in realtà dietro a questo nome si nasconde Terius Hagert Youngdell Nash. Anche questo nome vi dirà ancora meno però c'è da sapere che comunque questo ragazzo si diletta scrivere canzoni, tanto per fare qualche nome "Touch my body" di Mariah Carey, "Single ladies (Put a ring on it)" di Beyoncé o della fortunatissima "Umbrella" manco serve dire che si tratta della canzone di Rihanna.

Ed è proprio grazie alla canzone di Rihanna che raggiunge la notorietà che lo ha portato sulal strada del successo. Avrei voluto dirlo io, e invece ci hanno pensato quelli di Billboard molto prima di me:

Non è quindi difficile notare come su questa canzone avrebbe potuto cantare Michael Jackson, o eseguire una coreografia degna del suo nome perché il beat deciso e scandito sarebbe l'ideale per qualcosa del genere. Ma in questo caso abbiamo a che fare con Kanye West (che ultimamente abbiamo visto in "Knock you down" con Keri Hilson e Ne-Yo), che oltre ad aver prodotto la canzone partecipa al rappeggio. E che esibizione, come al solito West fa la sua comparsa con un'esibizione da lasciare senza fiato, davvero superba.

Davvero un pezzo hip hop che non manca di una certa melodia, di quel testo con una vena romantica che rende il brano appetibile al grande pubblico, per quanto riguarda le hits dell'estate. Un disco interessante che, anche se non ha ottenuto un successo tale da fargli guadagnare le prime posizioni delle classifiche più importanti, penso sia davvero degno di nota per soprattutto per le melodie che riesco a dare molto bene quel senso di atmosfera lunare che il brano vuole garantire.

Mariah Carey "Obsessed"

Prima o poi ci sarebbe cascata pure lei. Non so a cosa state pensando ma io mi riferisco al tanto famoso auto tune, che sta davvero spopolando in questi ultimi mesi nel mondo dell'hip hop e R&B, strumento che permette di modificare la voce, per intenderci è quell'effetto Cher che viene usato in "Believe", non faticherete a riconoscere quando la sua voce viene opportunamente alterata.

Ecco quindi la nostra Mariah Carey che entra a far parte del mondo della voce geneticamente modificata, al quale appartengono davvero molti artisti ma che mi sento dire capitanati da Kanye West con la sua "Love lockdown".

"Obsessed" (ascolta), uscito da pochi giorni, che anticipa l'uscita dell'album "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" pronto per il prossimo 25 Agosto 2009.

"It's different for me, but clearly, it's SO me!"

Sono queste le parole di Mariah Carey che definisce il disco "Diverso" ma allo stesso tempo così perfettamente in grado di rispecchiarla. Certo non facile immaginare la voce di questa cantante graffiante grazie ad un paio di filtri elettronici, eppure dopo un po' ci si fa l'abitudine. Niente vocalizzi da frantumare i calici di cristallo, piuttosto una base mid-tempo, forse un po' troppo piatta ma perfetta per muovere i dancefloor, per avvicinare la Carey al mondo dell'hip hop, visto che si fa fatica a definire la canzone R&B.

Niente melodie sdolcinate, ma toni più "duri", che forse lasceranno di stucco i vari fans, ma fa piacere vedere come quest'artista riesce sempre a stupire, spaziando tra i generi più svariati con risultati sempre molto apprezzabili. Anche in questo caso siamo di fronte ad un successo anticipato, se non ci accompagnerà per tutta l'estate inizierà a farlo per qualche settimana.

Il video ufficiale non è ancora stato rilasciato, per adesso quindi dobbiamo accontentarci di ascoltarla su YouTube, preparandoci a link che vanno e vengono, certo vi lascio un link per l'ascolto, ma è difficile assicurare che durerà, quindi nel caso non funzionasse più segnalatemelo pure nei commenti!

Keri Hilson "Knock you down (feat. Ne-Yo & Kanye West)"

Anche questa canzone fa parte del mio club "colpo di fulmine al primo ascolto", quelle canzoni che fin dalla prima volta che le sento mi rimangono subito in mente. In questo caso siamo di fronte ad un pezzo che unisce davvero tre artisti che in questi ultimi anni stanno lavorando parecchio, Keri Hilson (che ha iniziato con Timbaland, "The way I are"), Ne-Yo ("Closer", "Miss independent" che viene citata da lui stesso nel testo della canzone) e uno tra i miei preferiti in assoluto Kanye West, di cui farvi l'elenco delle sue canzoni migliori sarebbe difficile, vi rimando a tutte le volte che ne ho parlato sul mio blog).
"Knock you down" (ascolta), unisce il meglio dei tre artisti, lo stile inconfondibile di K. West, l'R&B di Ne-Yo e la splendida voce di Keri Hilson. Non meno importante anche la produzione di Danja (Britney Spears "Gimme more", Timbaland "The way I are", e anche gli album di Nelly Furtado "Loose" e di Justin Timberlake "FutureSex/LoveSounds") che rende la canzone davvero molto piacevole da ascoltare pur non mancando di notevoli spunti per essere ballata, visto il groove molto spesso deciso, con una cassa veloce che insegue le tastiere, tranne che nei ritornelli in cui si fa decisamente meno veloce ma altrettanto d'effetto.
Davvero un'ottima produzione, niente da ridire sui tre personaggi che qualsiasi cosa facciano non deludono mai, questa volta assieme in una canzone che divisa in tre parti potrebbe rappresentare benissimo le tre singole personalità.

Un paio di curiosità.
• Non a caso da Ne-Yo viene citata "Miss Independent" in questa canzone, infatti proprio Keri Hilson compare nel video della canzone di Ne-Yo, come potete vedere dallo screenshot sotto:
• Inizialmente la canzone non prevedeva la parte di Kanye West, aggiunta all'ultimo momento per volere della Hilson che ha premuto sulla produzione per avere anche Ne-Yo.
• La premiere della canzone è avvenuta il 4 Maggio al The Late Show with David Letterman, con un'esibizione davvero molto eighties, che potete vedere qui.
• Per chi fosse interessato gli occhiali portati da Ne-Yo nel video dovrebbero essere di DITA, modello Grandmaster-Two, potete dargli un'occhiata qui.

Recensione | N.A.S.A. "Gifted" (feat. Kanye West, Santigold & Lykke Li)

Altro progetto underground che ultimamente mi ha colpito. Parlo di N.A.S.A. acronimo di North America/South America (si riferisce alle nazionalità dei due fondatori Squeak E. Clean e DJ Zegon) che in realtà vede molti altri collaboratori.
Infatti scorrendo i crediti di "Gifted" (ascolta) possiamo notare ad esempio Kanye West, Santigold e Lykke Li.
Il disco si definisce nell'ambito hip hop, anche se ha molteplici spunti per spaziare anche su generi non contigui. Ad esempio elementi decisamente elettronici, un andamento generale che potrebbe ricordare un po' i Royksopp, con atmosfere forse inquietanti (non a caso la cantante Lykke Li che partecipa alla canzone è svedese), suoni che possono ricordare produzioni tendenti al genere chill out.
Non mi rimane che segnalarvi l'intero album, "The spirit of Apollo" un album davvero molto eclettico, che spazia da melodie rock ad altre più elettroniche, dal brazilian funk all'hip hop.

Un disco davvero strano, che personalmente mi ha subito colpito fin dal primo ascolto, se non altro per il video che è notevole per come è realizzato, un video particolare che di certo non passa inosservato.

Pianoforte mania, le proposte di YouTube/2

Ed eccoci al secondo appuntamento con la rubrica dedicata alle canzoni suonate al pianoforte su YouTube. Non parlo di canzoni nate per essere suonate con questo strumento ma di vere e proprie canzoni pop che acquistano nuovo fascino grazie ad abili utenti che ci sanno davvero fare con il piano, ed è questo il bello, secondo me, canzoni che normalmente ci schiferebbero che diventano decisamente molto più apprezzabili.
